Cookies

Last updated: 29 July 2026

This page explains what cookies and similar technologies DirtbagMaps uses, why, and how you control them. For the full picture of how we handle data, see our Privacy Policy.

1. What we do and don't do

We do not use advertising profiling, and the Service does not run Google Analytics or any comparable profiling tool. We do use Vercel Web Analytics — a cookieless, same-origin measurement tool that counts page views and a small allowlist of product interactions (such as opening the planner, building a plan, saving a trail or exporting GPX) in aggregate. Campaign labels tell us whether channels such as search, Pinterest or Instagram are useful. It sets no cookies, performs no cross-site tracking, and does not build a profile of individual visitors. We never send names, account IDs, email addresses, coordinates, notes or shared-plan payloads in analytics events.

We use browser local storage (not cookies) for functional preferences: your cookie-consent choice, display settings, and a local cache of your saved markers and trip planning. This data stays on your device.

We use session storage to retain an anonymous first-touch channel and campaign label while you browse in the current tab. It is discarded when that browser session ends and contains no visitor or account identifier.

2. Affiliate-network cookies (only with your consent)

DirtbagMaps is funded by affiliate links. When you click an affiliate link and our partner networks and partners (such as Stay22, Awin and CJ Affiliate) credit a resulting purchase, those networks set their own tracking cookies.

These are not set unless you accept them. We show a consent banner with clear Accept and Decline choices. Until you accept, affiliate links are served without network tracking parameters. You can change your mind at any time by clearing the Service's local storage. Declining does not affect any feature — every link still works.

We also log on our own servers the fact that an affiliate link was clicked (which partner and trail context, plus privacy-preserving abuse-prevention hashes of IP address and user-agent) so we can measure which content is useful and demonstrate traffic to affiliate networks. We do not attach your DirtbagMaps account id to new affiliate click logs.

3. Map-provider cookies

The interactive map is provided by Mapbox and, for place details, Google Maps Platform. Loading the map causes those providers to set cookies necessary for the map to function (for example, to load tiles and enforce usage limits). These are functional, not advertising, cookies.
