Japan’s classic long walks are as much cultural as they are physical. The Kumano Kodo is a UNESCO-listed pilgrimage through the forested Kii mountains, and the Nakasendo follows a preserved Edo-era highway between beautifully restored post towns.

Both are walked inn to inn, staying in traditional ryokan and minshuku, which makes booking ahead essential. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots — cherry blossom and cool clear days, or the fire-coloured maples — avoiding the humid summer and snowbound winter.
