PR 23 — Levada da Azenha

PR 23 — Levada da Azenha — the trail guide

The PR 23 — Levada da Azenha is a 0.9 km trek in Portugal, typically walked in 30–45 minutes, with 1 m of total ascent. It rates Easy on our published rubric (1 m of gain per km, topping out at 301 m).

PR 23 traces the Levada da Azenha, a 900-metre irrigation channel on the slope above Caniço in Madeira's Santa Cruz municipality. Levadas hold a contour, so the walking is flat: a paved, partly lit strip through terraced gardens at the southern end, narrowing to a rough path and a short footbridge before it reaches Caminho Velho do Castelo. It is an official waymarked PR route — yellow blaze between red bars — and one of the island's easiest, a half-hour taster rather than a day out.
