Hadrian's Wall Path

Hadrian's Wall Path — the trail guide

The Hadrian's Wall Path is a 135 km trek in England, typically walked in 6-7 days, with 1863 m of total ascent. It rates Moderate on our published rubric (14 m of gain per km, topping out at 333 m).

Hadrian's Wall Path runs coast to coast across northern England, tracing the Roman Empire's northern frontier from the Tyne estuary to the Solway Firth. National Trails puts it at 84 miles (135 km) and recommends six or seven days. The first day out of Wallsend is urban riverside through Newcastle. The trail then climbs onto the Whin Sill, where the Wall rides a switchback of dolerite crags past Chesters, Housesteads, Crag Lough and Walltown, before dropping into Cumbrian farmland and the salt marsh of the Solway. The walking is never technical; the difficulty is the relentless short climbs through the central section, and the fact that the surface is bare turf laid over buried archaeology.
