The GR 131 is La Palma's spine — 66 km walked north to south across the whole island. It leaves the Atlantic at Puerto de Tazacorte, climbs 2,400 metres to Roque de los Muchachos beside the observatory domes, then traces the rim of the Caldera de Taburiente before dropping to Refugio El Pilar and running the Ruta de los Volcanes over the Cumbre Vieja cinder cones to the Fuencaliente lighthouse. Nicknamed El Bastón for its walking-stick shape, it is the Canaries' finest ridge walk.
